Low Carb Doesn’t Have To Mean No Carb

Low Carb Meal Side 5 Ion Nutrition

You may have heard of the popular low carb weight-loss program, the Atkins Diet, but are not quite sure what exactly it entails. Meals that are Atkins friendly are low in carbohydrates and sugar, which in turn helps the body to burn fat as fuel. The diet is high in fats and proteins but low (and excludes)  foods such as sugar, fruit, grains, and many processed foods.

A typical Atkins standard meal plan for one day would look something like this:

Breakfast:

  • 2 cups chopped spinach
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 small tomato
  • 1⁄2 Hass avocado
  • 1 oz Monterey jack cheese

Snack:

  • 1 small zucchini & 1 1⁄2 oz cheddar cheese

Lunch:

  • 4 oz canned tuna
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1⁄2 cup chopped snap peas
  • 1⁄4 cup chopped red bell pepper
  • 1 medium tomato

Snack:

  • 1 cup sliced green bell pepper & 2 Tbsp Ranch Dressing

Dinner:

  • 6 oz chicken breast
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 2 Tbsp Hollandaise Sauce
  • 2 cups mixed greens
  • 2 Tbsp Creamy Italian Dressing

The benefits of an Atkins-style diet include:

  • Fast weight loss
  • Reduced hunger or cravings (especially for sweets)
  • Better control over insulin and blood sugar (glucose) spikes. This can be especially beneficial for prediabetics or diabetics, although low-carb diets aren’t the only way to reduce diabetes risk factors.
  • Enhanced cognitive performance, including less brain fog or dips in energy
  • In some cases, lower risk for heart disease factors
  • Potentially reduced risk for certain types of cancer

While the Atkins Diet is extremely strict with counting net carbs, some of the ‘allowed foods’ are not necessarily the healthiest items. IONutrition offers a healthier form of Atkins delivery, nationwide. IONutrition meals are gluten-free, dairy-free, soy and corn free, and only use fresh, organic ingredients.

If you are looking to get your body back on track, feel more energized, or simply lose weight, this eating style might be the right fit for you! Research has shown that a low-carb diet like Atkins has demonstrated to have many more benefits other than just losing weight. To name a few, they include: epilepsy and related illnesses, acid reflux (GERD), acne, headaches, heart disease, cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), diabetes/metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance, dementia and narcolepsy.

No matter what your health goals are, we provide customized meal plans to meet your needs. Whether you are focused on:

  • Losing weight
  • Increasing Muscle definition
  • Getting your blood or sugar levels back down
  • Eating healthier

Reducing your carbohydrate intake and sticking to a more natural, whole foods based meal plan can be the way to get there. However, we understand that managing an active lifestyle and having the time to plan and prepare healthy, nutritious, meals is not easy. Our team of experts will help you avoid common carb pitfalls by excluding low carb, high nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, beans, and legumes. (Did you know: legumes, though considered high in protein, actually acquire about 74% of their calorie count from carbohydrates).

Bear in mind, this should not be confused with how many calories your meals contain. Calories are available in almost everything we eat and drink. So reducing carbs means reducing the amount (grams) of carbs consumed in the foods you eat. Here is a list of grams of carbohydrates in your foods to get you started.

Now, you might be thinking “How can I remove carbs altogether?! They are everywhere!”

Low carb doesn’t mean no carb. It simply means consciously reducing the amount of carbs on your daily menu (pasta, sugar, bread, grains, etc.), bringing your daily intake beneath 75 grams.
