The fact is that butter is a versatile food and is used in a wide variety of different types of foods.

How Many Calories Are In Butter

You may be wondering, “How many calories does butter add to my food?”

Obviously, that number of calories is going to change depending on how much butter you’re using. Cookies are probably going to require more butter for the whole batch than corn on the cob, but how much butter is really going into a single cookie.

Because of how butter is used, it’s often hard to say exactly how many calories come from butter in a particular food product or recipe.

We know that a pad of butter, which is about 5 grams, has about 36 calories in it. It’s got 4.1 grams of fat, 0 grams of carbs and 0 grams of protein.  From here it’s just a matter of math.

Just remember:

  • A pad of butter is 5 grams
  • A teaspoon of butter is 14.2 grams
  • A stick of butter is 113 grams
  • A cup of butter is 227 grams

Knowing this, we can do the math to figure out how much butter is in a given food or recipe.

So is butter good for you? Is it healthy?

The fact is, what’s considered healthy is extremely subjective. Obviously, a fit football player can eat a lot more than the average overweight man in his 30s. What you should consider healthy is what your body needs to keep going.

Most people get more than enough carbs and fat in their diet but few people get the vitamins, minerals, and fiber that they need. Butter is primarily a source of fat and therefore not the most useful ingredient to put in your food. There are alternatives out there that may be healthier.

There are other alternatives to butter that may be a bit healthier. Some are better because their saturated to polyunsaturated to monounsaturated ratio is different. Others have more vitamins and minerals. Others simply have less fat.

Some healthier alternatives to butter include:

  • Coconut butter
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Mashed avocado
  • Olive oil
  • Applesauce
  • Yogurt
  • Nut butters
  • Pumpkin puree
  • Peanut butter

Obviously, not all of these butter alternatives can be used as interchangeably as butter can. You can use one of these alternatives in certain recipes and you can use a different alternative for another recipe. It all kind of depends on what you’re making.
